Phosphate Flame-Retardant ACS/PC Alloy
A formulation and processing reference for ACS/PC blends, with reported flame-retardant, mechanical and flow properties compared with ABS/PC systems.
Case at a glance
Reported performance, in context.
The supplied reference compares phosphate flame-retardant systems at a 75:25 polymer mass ratio. These are source-reported results, not SCO Chemical test data or a certified product specification.
Reference formulation
Composition and addition levels.
The formulation is reproduced as parts by mass. The ranges below are retained as supplied; they are not percentages and do not define one fixed recipe.
| Component | Addition level |
|---|---|
| Polycarbonate (PC) | 10–30 |
| Acrylonitrile–chlorinated polyethylene–styrene (ACS) | 70–90 |
| Maleic anhydride-grafted acrylonitrile–styrene (AS-g-MAH) | 3–5 |
| Flame retardant | 5.0 |
| PTFE | 0.5 |
| Antioxidant | 0.3 |
| Other additives | As required |
Processing route
From drying to molded specimens.
These preparation conditions are reported in the supplied reference. They are a record of that procedure, not a universal processing recommendation for all commercial resin grades.
Prepare the resin components
Dry PC at 120°C for 6 hours. Dry ACS and the AS-g-MAH compatibilizer at 80°C for 4 hours.
Mix the formulation
Charge the resin components, compatibilizer, flame retardant and other additives into a high-speed mixer. Mix at 1,000 rpm for 10 minutes.
Extrude and pelletize
Use a twin-screw extruder at a reported temperature range of 180–205°C and a screw speed of 150–200 rpm.
Injection-mold test samples
Prepare specimens by injection molding at the reported temperature range of 150–215°C.
Performance comparison
ACS/PC alongside ABS/PC.
All three columns retain the original table values. ACS:PC and ABS:PC are each 75:25 by mass in this comparison.
| Property | ACS/PC 14 parts | ABS/PC 14 parts | ABS/PC 20 parts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doher-7000 loading (parts) | 14 | 14 | 20 |
| Reported flame rating | V-0 | V-2 | V-0 |
| Tensile strength (MPa) | 54 | 56 | 54 |
| Notched impact strength (J/m) | 220 | 285 | 186 |
| Melt flow rate (g/10 min) | 10 | 12 | 19 |
| Heat deflection temperature (°C) | 77.5 | 78.7 | 74.1 |
| Color difference (source units) | 5.2 | 9.6 | 10.4 |
In this comparison, ACS/PC is reported as V-0 at 14 parts, while ABS/PC is V-2 at the same loading and V-0 at 20 parts. At the reported V-0 conditions, ACS/PC has the same tensile strength as ABS/PC and higher reported notched impact strength and heat deflection temperature. These observations apply only to the listed reference systems.
